Biography
Jazz drummer Jean Martin has been active in Toronto's music scene throughout the '90s. As a member of Chelsea Bridge, he recorded a few albums for the Unity label; he has also worked with D.D. Jackson, and can be heard on the pianist's 1996 trio date, Rhythm-Dance. Martin studied under Adam Nussbaum in N.Y.C., has been a featured soloist in the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and has played in France and all over North America with a number of acclaimed jazz musicians, including Jackson, David Murray, Roddy Ellias, and vocalist Kate Hammet-Vaughn. He performs on over 15 recordings led by others, and began leading his own groups in the late '90s, including the Bitches Brew Project and a trio with trumpeter Kevin Turcotte and guitarist Justin Haynes. The Jean Martin Trio's debut recording, Get Together Weather, came out in 1999 and was followed by a Canadian tour that included festival appearances at the duMaurier Jazz Festival and more. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi
