Biography
Kany García is a Latin pop singer, songwriter, and producer from Puerto Rico. Her often dramatic and confessional songs crisscross genres from folk and rock to cumbia, tropical styles, and Americana while addressing desire, sexual identity, domestic violence, aging, human indifference, commitment, and family, all delivered in a husky, emotionally resonant contralto. Her 2007 debut album, Cualquier Día, was certified platinum. 2009's gold-certified Boleto De Entrada reached the Top Ten. 2017's Limonada, her best-known work, topped albums charts in three countries, and 2018's Soy Yo was chosen by Billboard as one of "The 50 Best Latin Albums of the Decade." 2019's Contra el Viento is regarded as a feminist Latin classic; its songs include spoken word intros from women she admires. 2020's Mesa Para Dos offered a series of collaborations with other Latin artists and won a Latin Grammy, and in 2022, she issued the concept album El Amor Que Merecemos.

Garcia is the daughter of former Spanish priest Antonio and puertorriqueña Encarnita García de Jesús. She grew up in a home filled with music in the town of Toa Baja. The youngest of three musically inclined siblings, Kany began studying classical music as a child. Already well-versed in cello, music theory, and voice, Kany began attending the renowned Escuela Libre de Música at age 13. In her mid-teens she abandoned the idea of a career in classical music in favor of pursuing her passion for pop songwriting. After graduation, García continued her studies at the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. In her early twenties, a brush with fame became a brush with death for the budding artist. Following a successful audition for the television program Objectivo Fama, she fell asleep behind the wheel, barely surviving a near-fatal car accident. The hospital stay cost her the opportunity to appear on the show.

The setback didn't keep García from the craft that she loved. She continued to write and perform and soon came to the attention of Sony BMG. While being courted by the music industry superpower, Sony invited her to share the stage with Franco De Vita at an engagement in Puerto Rico. Her performance was met so warmly, it garnered the evening's only standing ovation, and an offer of a recording contract followed shortly thereafter. Her debut album, Cualquier Día, was released in July of 2007 and reached number ten on Billboard's Latin Pop Albums chart. The set was also certified platinum in the U.S. and gold in Mexico. In 2008 she won a pair of Latin Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Her follow-up, 2009's Boleto de Entrada, entered the Top Latin Albums chart at number six. Its single, "Feliz," landed inside the Top Five of the Latin Pop Songs chart. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

García toured extensively for the next year and lent her voice to recordings by Tego Calderon (El Que Sabe, Sabe) and Gilberto Santa Rosa (Irrepetible). Her third self-titled album was issued in July of 2012. It debuted at number one on various charts in Puerto Rico and in the United States. It netted four charting singles and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. She followed it with the concert recording En Vivo in 2014. When not touring she wrote and recorded with producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Lana Del Rey). The pre-release single "Perfecto Para Mi" arrived in the fall of the following year, scoring well inside the Top 40 of the Latin Pop Songs chart and showing high visibility on streaming charts.

García's fourth studio album, Limonada, was issued in May of 2016, three months after she came out as lesbian in a relationship with her personal trainer, Jocelyn Troche. After opening its run in the top spot, the album transcended the media storm around her sexuality and remained in the top slot for another two weeks, staying on the list for the remainder of the year. It is inarguably her best-known album. In December, she wrote the hit song "Chegaste" for Jennifer Lopez and Roberto Carlos.

After tours of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, García took a short break before re-entering the studio with producer/guitarist Afo Verde -- Sony's Chairman/CEO of Latin America, Spain, and Portugal -- and her musical director Marcos Sanchez. The resulting album, 2018's Soy Yo, featured two guest appearances: Melendi joined her for a duet on "A Mis Amigos," and longtime friend Residente (Calle 13) appeared on the closing track "Banana Papaya," which also became the subject of a popular video. The album peaked at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. That year she also collaborated as a producer on Natti Natasha's Illuminati and wrote the hit duet single "Chegaste" for Jennifer Lopez and Roberto Carlos.

García's sixth album, Contra el Viento, arrived in May 2019 and hit number 22 on the Top Latin Albums chart and number three on the Latin Pop Albums chart. In addition to duets with Natalia Lafourcade, Tommy Torres and Fito Paez, it offered short spoken word intros for each song by women she admired: Her mother Mercedes Sosa, Sofia Vergara, Natasha, Thalia, Soledad Pastorutti, and Lila Downs. She also took home a Latin Grammy for Best Singer/Songwriter Album. That same year she wrote the hit duet "Esa Mujer" for Roberto Carlos and Alejandro Sanz. It appeared on Carlos' first Spanish-language album Amor Sin Limite. García and Troche married on Christmas Day 2019.

In May 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Garcia released Mesa Para Dos, her seventh album. The ten-song set offered collaborations with a range of Latin artists including Laferte, Carlos Rivera, Carlos Vives, Reik, Spanish rock singer Leiva, Colombian singer Goyo from ChocQuibTown, Argentine singer Nahuel Pennisi, and Catalina García from Monsieur Periné. It was nominated for Album of the Year, and won Best Singer/Songwriter Album -- the second consecutive time she won the award. The single "Lo Que en Ti Veo" with Pennisi received nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, while the song "Búscame" was nominated for Best Tropical Song. Further, Mesa Para Dos was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop or Urban Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

In May 2022, García released El Amor Que Merecemos, her eighth album. The diverse set included collaborations with Sanz on the ballad "Mueros"; with Rozalén on the urbano cumbia of "Justito Tiempo," and Jay Wheeler on the bolero "No Vuelvas." El Amor Que Merecemos was based on a narrative concept about contemporary woman who recognizes her values and qualities and learns to practice radical self-acceptance and self-love. She eventually realizes exactly what she does and does not want in life and in relationships of all kinds and embarks on that journey. In preparation for the album's release and tour, García accepted singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera's invitation to write for her forthcoming Spanish-language album. Following 2022's La Fuerza EP, it was her first non-English language offering in more than 20 years. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez & Thom Jurek, Rovi
