Biography
Long one of the British pop scene's most prolific and acclaimed producers, John Leckie began his career as a tape operator and engineer at the legendary Abbey Road studios, where he worked on such high-profile projects as George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. His production career began in 1976 with Be-Bop Deluxe's Sunburst Finish; Leckie left Abbey Road to go freelance two years later, quickly becoming one of the top producers of the immediate post-punk era with his work on acclaimed efforts including the Adverts' Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts, XTC's White Music, Magazine's Real Life and Public Image Limited's debut single "Public Image." A series of recordings with frequent collaborators Bill Nelson and Simple Minds followed, and in 1984 Leckie also began working with Felt (their full-length debut The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories) and the Fall (The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall). His major contribution to the era, however, was the 1989 self-titled debut of the Stone Roses, one of the landmark British pop albums of its time; in the decade to follow, Leckie also helmed acclaimed releases from the Verve (the brilliant A Storm in Heaven), Radiohead (The Bends) and Kula Shaker (K). ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
