Biography
A founding member of popular and long-running electronic group Underworld, Rick Smith didn't intend to establish a music career when, back in the late '70s, he joined a post-punk band as its synthesizer player. That act, the Screen Gemz, included Karl Hyde, who would become Smith's recording partner for over three decades, from Freur (known most for their 1983 synth pop single "Doot-Doot") to Underworld, who easily switched from producing hard-hitting club singles with commercial appeal to scoring films. Beginning with their contribution to the soundtrack for Trainspotting, Underworld developed a creative partnership with Danny Boyle. Smith and Hyde worked on the director's Sunshine (2007) and his stage production of Frankenstein (2011), as well as the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics. In a matter of only a few weeks after the ceremony, Smith began solo work on the score for Boyle's film Trance. Released in 2013, the soundtrack featured 11 of his own tracks, including collaborations with Emeli Sandé and film co-star Rosario Dawson. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
