Biography
Bassist John Ore is best known for his association with Thelonious Monk but throughout his career he proved his ability to play quite credibly in swing and bop settings too. Ore studied cello at the New School of Music in Philadelphia (1943-46) and bass at Juilliard (1952). He worked with many top names in the 1950s including Tiny Grimes (1953), George Wallington, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Elmo Hope and Bud Powell (on and off from 1955-57). Ore was a member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet from 1960-63, played with the Double Six of Paris (1964) and worked with Powell again and with Teddy Wilson. The bassist, who played with Earl Hines in the mid-1970s (recording with him in 1977), has had a lower profile since the early 1980s. Ore, who never had an opportunity to lead his own record date, was always a solid accompanist and fared well as an occasional soloist. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
