Tyshawn Johnson was born in 1999 in Chestertown, Maryland. Growing up with a strong interest in both music and dance, Johnson began posting videos of his dancing under the moniker Yvng Swag in his teenage years, reaching across social media platforms like Vine, YouTube, and Instagram and quickly gathering hundreds of thousands of followers. His 2016 viral video "Big Green Tractor Remix" quickly reached millions of views, showcasing the young rapper dancing to a country song reworked with a booming trap rhythm. This online attention got him a deal with the Def Jam spin-off All Def Digital Co. Moving from the realm of dance into music, Yvng Swag released his debut single, "Fall in Luv," in late 2016, following it with second single "Hit My Phone" several months later. His debut EP, 32 Teeth, was released in November 2017. A slew of singles followed in 2018, including collaborations with ItsAMovie ("Afterlife") and Pedrito Vm ("Flamingo Star").
