Biography
The Stockholm Jazz Orchestra takes the big band setting and infuses it with a more experimental repertoire and increased improvisation. Formed in the mid-'80s by trumpeter/leader Fredrik Norén, it has developed into a highly regarded European orchestra, and it's worth noting that this sizable group is not a radio station's orchestra, but independent. Two of SJO's '90s albums have featured the music of pianist Jim McNeely, while other releases have featured trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, and Carlos Franzetti (who acted as music director for the group's 1999 album Tango). Numerous other guests have worked with the SJO, including Toots Thielemans and Joe Lovano. The SJO has performed at jazz festivals across Europe and visited the U.S. in 1994. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi
