Biography
Jamaican producer and dub master Peter Chemist (sometimes known just as Chemist) collaborated with many of reggae's greatest names throughout the '80s and rode one of the first waves of digital dub into the '90s. As an engineer, he worked with an exhaustive list of notable artists that included Sugar Minott, Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman, the Gladiators, and many, many others, and he also released a string of dub albums under his own name, such as 1984's Dub Mixture and the more computerized sounds of 1989's Chemist Formula, Vol. 1 as well as collaborative efforts with Scientist and Mad Professor.

Peter Chemist was born Donovan Thompson in 1967 and was involved with the Jamaican music scene by his teenage years. Along with arranging '80s albums for Horace Andy, Tenor Saw, Leroy Smart, and a host of other roots acts, Chemist released several dub albums in a quick succession around 1984, including Dub Mixture, Dub Prescription, Dubsplash '84, and the Scientist split LP 1999 Dub. In 1989, he teamed with Mad Professor for joint LP In the Revolt of the Slave, and later that year released the drum machine- and synth-heavy dub set Chemist Formula, Vol. 1. Throughout the '90s, Chemist continued producing for reggae stars as the genre's sound evolved. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
