Biography
Not to be confused with several other '60s groups called the Esquires -- including the soul group who had a hit with Get On Up, and the Texan group who did a couple of garage classics in Judgment Day and Come On, Come On -- these Esquires hailed from Springfield, Massachusetts. They're best-known for evolving, with some personnel changes, into the Bold, who did an excellent Paul Revere the Raiders-like garage rocker in 1966, Gotta Get Some (as anthologized on Pebbles, Vol. 9). As the Esquires, they did eke out one obscure mid-'60s single on the tiny Salem label, pairing a routine cover of Shake a Tail Feather with the British Invasion-derived garage rocker Down the Track, penned by the group's Steve Walker. Both sides of the single can be found on the Bold compilation Lullaby Opus Four, which contains the entire 1969 album by Bold, and both sides of the Bold's two prior singles (credited to both the Bold and Steve Walker the Bold). ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
