Bronx rapper Cory Gunz grew up delivering iron-clad East Coast bars. The son of rapper Peter Gunz, Cory was rapping publicly by age 14, dropping in on tracks by Rihanna and Lil Wayne and releasing mixtapes of his own throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s. He stayed active as the years went on, working with Def Jam, then Young Money, and releasing independent mixtapes and collaborative projects like the 2020 EP Guns Butter and 2022's Gunz x Bars with David Bars.

Cory Gunz was born Peter Cory Pankey, Jr. in 1987. He began rapping earlier than most, signing to Def Jam at age 14 with the personal assistance of Jay-Z. By age 18, he had added a verse to a remix of Rihanna's "If It's Lovin' That You Want" and also issued a series of popular self-released mixtapes, The Apprentice Mixtapes, Vols. 1-3. Gunz was relentlessly active throughout the late 2000s and the 2010s, hopping on tracks from stars like Smoke DZA, Meek Mill, Method Man, and countless others while releasing solo mixtapes of his own such as 2008's Best Kept Secret and 2009's DJ Drama-hosted Gangsta Grillz tape Heir to the Throne. Gunz worked often with Lil Wayne around the peak of his worldwide dominance, contributing a verse to Wayne's 2008 multi-platinum smash hit "A Milli" that was removed from the song before the final mix was released with no other rappers than Weezy. Gunz's contributions did make the final cut on multiple other Wayne songs, however, including a featured verse on the 2011 track "6 Foot 7 Foot." Gunz was also signed to Young Money for a time, and the label released his 2013 mixtape Datz WTF I'm Talkin' Bout in conjunction with After Platinum.
