It looks like I'm fat but I'm tough as new rubber

My boots may be full of mud 
I have no bullets for my gun

Well I got a bit of land when my dad passed but it doesn't grow shit 
And its way off yonder somewhere near the lonely mountains I've always tried to avoid it 
But if we go there together 
We can build an earth ship 
You can paint all day  
On all those strips of leather that sit  
 
In that box in the hall closet under your shoes 
And you can tell our daughter  
About the days when we barely made it through 
When we rode the dark trail together 
We were lost in the never never 
 
There's eighteen naked cowboys plotting my demise at ram ranch 
So I ride a little past and in a ravine is where I make my camp  
put my blanket down
and roll my last cigarette 
I see a mirage and it feels kind of bizarre 
 
It's the future of us sitting around playing cards 
And I lean past my losing hand and say 
Remember the days? 
That we rode the dark trail together 
We were lost in the never never
