The Chimes were the first group whom the legendary William Smokey Robinson crooned and doo wopped with, and are not to be confused with Chicago's Five Chimes. Like any upstart group, members changed frequently, but the original lineup included Robinson, Clarence Dawson, James Grice, Donald Wicker, and Warren Pete Moore. No more than 13 or 14 when formed, they hit a stride while students at Northern High in Detroit. Ronald White replaced Wicker and Bobby Rogers replaced Grice. According to Jerry Potter (the Fascinators) in Robert Pruter's -Doo Wop: The Chicago Scene book, the Chimes rehearsed at Monroe Horn's Record Shop, with Horn rolling tape while they recorded. Horn ran the short-lived Your Copy Records, but didn't release anything for the Chimes.

Writers and researchers have known about Monroe Horn since 1985, prior to Pruter's book. Horn seemingly dropped off the face of the earth -- even his mom didn't have a clue as to his whereabouts.

Claudette Rogers replaced her brother, Emerson; now the lineup was Robinson, White, More, Claudette Rogers, and Bobby Rogers. Learning of Chicago's Five Chimes, the group changed their name to the Matadors to avoid confusion.
