Biography
With a clear, cool voice and a knack for writing simple pop songs in the girl group/noise pop tradition, Martha Ffion began her recording career in 2014 with an EP titled Go. Prior to that, the Irish-born singer/songwriter -- full name Claire Martha Ffion McKay -- had played instruments growing up, but hadn't really begun writing songs inspired by the alternative rock of her youth (like the early Strokes) until she moved to Glasgow. Once there, the 18-year-old began playing folk-pop, mostly backed only by her acoustic guitar. When she recorded Go, however, she utilized the services of the band Poor Things and the three songs recorded were simple and honest guitar pop. The experience caused Ffion to shift over to playing with a band full-time, and her next single, 2015's "No Applause/"Lead Balloon" double A-side on Lost Map Records, had no traces of folk-pop left over. This record, plus her live set, convinced Welsh indie label Turnstile to sign her to a recording contract. The first Martha Ffion record for the label was 2016's Trip EP. She then spent most of 2017 working on her debut album with producer Jamie Savage and her live band at Glasgow's Chem 19 studio. A mix of newly written noisy indie pop songs and re-recorded versions of previously released singles, Sunday Best was issued in March of 2018. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
