Biography
Scatman Patin was tenor saxophonist in the Riff Raffs, a Lafayette, LA group that played New Orleans-styled rock and R&B in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Several of the musicians in the group recorded as solo artists for the Ram label, including Patin, singer Bobby Page, singer/pianist Roy Perkins, and saxophonist Harry Simoneaux. Patin's sole Ram single was 1958's Ginning/Red Beans Rice, which were typical New Orleans rock instrumentals, with Patin taking a good squealing solo near the end of Red Beans Rice. For the release the group was renamed the Ram Rods, and the single billed to Scatman Patin and the Ram Rods. Both sides of the single appear on the Ace compilation Roy Perkins, which has material by Perkins, Page, Patin, and Simoneaux. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
