Originally from Jacksonville, North Carolina, Jené grew up in the church but was apprehensive about singing until an epiphany in her early teens prompted her to perform her first solo. As she honed her vocals, she started to write songs, and changed lyrics of secular songs to make them sacred. Jené caught the ear of Deputy, co-writer and co-producer of Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money," along with tracks by Wale and J. Cole. Signed to a production deal with Deputy, Jené moved to Los Angeles, and in 2018 issued her first commercial recordings, beginning with "Mad Bitches" and "Stay," followed by the Carolina Blues EP. After she released a small batch of singles in 2019 and 2020, Jené contributed to the soundtrack of Insecure's fifth season, providing a new version of "Mad Bitches" with Ro James in a featured role. Continuing to work closely with Deputy, Jené made her Def Jam debut in 2022 with "Human Nature," an original slow jam offered as the lead single of the subsequent Missing Peace EP. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
