Brian Pendleton was the rhythm guitarist in the first lineup of the Pretty Things, playing on their mid-'60s singles and first two albums. Like the band's lead guitarist Dick Taylor (and Mick Jagger), he had gone to Dartford Grammar School in the London suburbs. In addition to playing rhythm guitar, he also played slide, most memorably as a prominent feature of the Pretty Things' first single, Rosalyn. He left the band around the end of 1966 under mysterious circumstances; it has been written that he might have undergone a nervous breakdown. He also left the music business, although he did play Rosalyn with the band at the 100 Club in London at a 1995 show. He was ill with cancer when he died in 2001. Dick Taylor offered this observation shortly after Pendleton's death, as reported in the magazine Ugly Things: "He was a blinding rhythm guitarist, he really was. There's plenty of people who can play like Jimi Hendrix but there's not many who can play like Brian Pendleton." ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
