The Liverpool band the Eyes (not to be confused with the longer-lasting mod outfit of the same name) were formed by John Frankland (guitar, vocals), Paddy Chambers (vocals, lead guitar), and Gibson Kemp (drums), coming out of Kingsize Taylor's former band the Dominoes, with future actor Lewis Collins, who'd previously played drums with the Kansas City Five, on bass.

After a brief apprenticeship in Liverpool during the summer of 1964, the group established themselves at the Star-Club in Hamburg, adding American saxophone/flute player John Phillips, late of the Roadrunners, and replaced Collins with Klaus Voormann, a classical guitar student and designer who'd never played bass before. The Eyes developed a top reputation in Hamburg behind Phillips' playing, and the band endured until the early spring of 1965. They cut one single, She b/w Peanut Butter, the A-side written by Paddy Chambers while the B-side (essentially Hully Gully with other lyrics) was a cover of an old rock 'n roll standard that had previously been recorded by Liverpool's Big Three trio. That record was released only in Germany, on the Star-Club label.

Phillips left to return to the United States, and Frankland exited when the band returned to England, while Gibson Kemp, Paddy Chambers, and Klaus Voorman formed Paddy Klaus Gibson, the vehicle through which Voorman first officially entered the orbit of the Beatles and John Lennon. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
