Faubert made his first impression on the indie scene as the lead singer of the Cheepskates, who made more than half a dozen albums for American and German labels in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Cheepskates' records owed a lot to styles of the 1960s, particularly garage rock and British Invasion pop, played in a revivalist mode. As a solo, singer and multi-instrumentalist Faubert branched out into a more diverse and subtle indie pop trail, capably essaying folk-rock, baroque pop, and power pop variations. His songwriting tends to emphasize tender and fragile emotions, complemented well by his high and unaffected vocals.
