Biography
Three different labels released the Persianettes', It Happens Every Day b/w Call On Me - Strata (5/1965), Open (1966), and OR Records (1969). Leon Huff and Cindy Scott, nee Sundray Tucker, get composer credits, Huff later partnered with Kenny Gamble for a Hall-of-Fame career. The Persianettes formed in Camden, NJ, and changed members some before finalizing on Vera Carey, Lucille Dunbar (lead), and Helen Hutchinson. All attended Camden High though Helen is a little older than Vera and Lucille and graduated earlier. Their first record appearance was backing Timmy Carr nee Carstaphen, songwriter Vic Carstarphen's older brother. Lucille and Vera were still in high school when they backed Carr on Only Know And Then b/w I Could Never Stop Cryin' , on Guyden Records. Ridin' the Beatles craze, they recorded Dance Baby Dance, on Jamie as the Beatlettes. Swan issued What Good Is It, in 1966, but like It Happens Every Day, it didn't do much outside of Philadelphia. A reason for the lack of solo recordings was their value as session singers. Producers wanted them around to back artists like Timmy Carr, Ben Krass, Dee Dee Sharp, Crystal Mansion, and others.

The trio broke up in 1966, mainly because of Lucille's increasing interest in church singing, and a mounting weight problem that she felt no need to correct. Their infamous three-time-single is on Philly Soul Girls; on the same CD they accompany Cindy Scott on three tracks. Vera Carey contributed to Cindy Scott's fantastic solo CD on Driving Wheel Records, The Loving Country. ~ Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
