Biography
Although the Kingston Trio, comprised of Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, and Bob Shane, met in Palo Alto in the mid-'50s, the members of the group also participated in other acts during that time. When Shane briefly moved to Hawaii before the Kingston Trio had ever recorded, Guard and Reynolds sang in Dave Guard the Calpysonians, who also included Joe Gannon on bass and Barbara Bogue. They never released any records in their short-lived existence, with Guard, Reynolds, and Shane reconnecting to form the Kingston Trio in mid-1957. Dave Guard the Calypsonians, however, did record eight demos in early 1957. Two of these, Fast Freight (the only song on the eight demos that the Kingston Trio would record) and Run Joe, appear on the Kingston Trio box set The Capitol Years. These are competent, if lo-fi, harmony folk, with a calypso influence indeed present. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
