Biography
Orchestra Super Mazembe remains one of Kenya's top dance bands. In addition to scoring an international hit with their interpretation of a classic tune, Shauri Yako, in 1984, the band recorded such regional hits as Shida, Mwana Mazembe, Kasongo, and Amina. Formed in 1967, as Super Vox, Orchestra Super Mazembe reached its peak with the arrival of vocalist and songwriter, Nasil Pichen Kazembe in 1970. For the next two decades, Kazembe and Orchestra Super Mazembe lay the foundation of the East African rumba style. Although Kazembe died in 1991, the group remained together and performed weekends at the Motherland Inn Restaurant. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
