Biography
Ninth-generation sarangi master Sabir Khan began training at the age of six, working under his father, the legendary Ustad Sultan Khan. Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in 1978, he became schooled in the Sikar gharana style of Indian classical music and spent many years performing on-stage with his father while simultaneously developing his own solo career throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Collaborating with such notables as Zakir Hussain, Kumar Bose, Anindo Chatterjee, Ranjit Barot, Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, and Karsh Kale, Khan has also played in a number of Indian films, including Anwar (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and Amma (2018). Throughout his career, Khan has appeared on numerous recordings, many of them with his father, who passed away in 2011. A collection of father-and-son collaborations titled The Legacy was released in 2014. Well known in the international music scene, he has become widely regarded for his distinctive technical combination of sur and laya (note and rhythm). ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
