Biography
Sean Khan is a London-based composer, saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Though primarily known as a jazz musician and leader of the SK Radicals, he issued the first broken beat album, When Will We Belong?, for Goya in 2001. The album established him as one of the London beat scene's pioneers, which led to collaborative work with Bugz in the Attic, Kaidi Tatham, and Mark De Clive-Lowe, among others. In 2009, he signed to Far Out Recordings and released his solo debut Slow Burner in 2011, showcasing his first full jazz exploration. In 2015 he followed it up with Muriel, a tribute to his late mother. It featured vocal appearances by British neo-soul pioneer Omar, Heidi Vogel, and Sabrina Malheiros. It inspired remixes by Henry Wu, 4Hero, and Nicola Conte. 2018 saw the release of the globally acclaimed Palmares, featuring Hermeto Paschoal. The collaboration included the Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist on most cuts as well as Azymuth drummer Ivan Mamao Conti and Fabio Paschoal on percussion. Vogel and Malheiros provided vocals. A cult hit, the set's singles were spun in clubs from Rio to Los Angeles to Bristol. In 2021, Khan issued Supreme Love: A Journey Through Coltrane, his debut offering for BBE. Performed by several small to medium-sized ensembles, its orchestrations included strings, harp, and Vogel's vocals. Split between Coltrane tunes and originals inspired by them, its final two tracks appeared as remixes by Tatham. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
