Biography
Detroit popsters the Nice Device formed in early 2001 to bridge the exploding garage rock revival scene and the underrated Detroit power pop scene with a polished, yet slightly trashy sound filled with hooks akin to the Runaways and the Breeders. Centered around vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Alicia Gbur, the quartet quickly built a name playing full-on, high-energy rock shows with ferocious charm and infectious pop influences worn proudly on their sleeves. In a somewhat surprising move after her four-year stretch co-leading the folk group Sister Seed, Gbur formed the Nice Device with guitarist Matt Lannoo, bassist Rich Griffith, and drummer Nick Gerhardt to showcase the dynamic rock roll songs she had been writing. Griffith's tenure lasted only a few months, but after his departure, Atomic Numbers guitarist Zach Shipps took over bass duties full-time and the group began to play plenty more. Finally, in May of 2003, the Nice Device debuted on wax with the Gotta Get It 7", engineered by White Stripes producer and Mooney Suzuki engineer Jim Diamond. ~ Gregory McIntosh, Rovi
