Born in Norfolk, England in 1944, drummer Peter Jay formed the Jaywalkers while attending Norwich College in 1960. The lineup for the primarily instrumental band consisted of Pete Buzz Miller (guitar), Tony Webster (rhythm guitar), Mac McIntyre (saxophone), Lloyd Baker (piano), Johnny Larke (electric bass), and Geoff Moss (acoustic bass). Following two years of constant gigging and building their reputation as a popular live act, the Jaywalkers were signed by Decca Records. They went into the studio with legendary producer Joe Meek and recorded their first single "Can Can 62," which topped out on the U.K. charts at 31 in November of 1962. In late 1963 the band landed the high-profile gig as a support act to the Beatles and made a few television appearances in the U.K. on such popular music shows as Ready Steady Go. By 1964, the band had not reentered the Top 40 and as the initial success of "Can Can 62" waned, they were dropped by Decca and signed with the Piccadilly label, a subsidiary of Pye Records. In 1965, guitarist Terry Reid joined the band, taking over for original guitarist Pete Miller. Jay changed the name of the band to reflect the personnel shift to the New Jaywalkers and joined a package tour of the U.K. featuring the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds, among others.
