Wayne Jetton was still in high school when he got his one and -- so far as is known -- his only break in the music business. Jetton was going to school in Gainesville, TX and singing and writing songs in his spare time. He was good enough to get on the air locally on KGAF, a radio station owned by Joe Leonard, who decided to form Lin Records late in 1953, as a way of showcasing and maybe doing some good for some of the people he was broadcasting. Jetton was good enough still to become the first artist ever cut by Lin Records in December of 1953, for two songs, A Crazy Mind Plus a Foolish Heart and Somebody's Girl, both originals. Jetton had a good command of language and lyrics, not to mention a very good voice -- released early in 1954, A Crazy Mind Plus A Foolish Heart only sold around 1000 copies, however. Leonard would have been willing to record Jetton again, given the promise he showed, but the boy was drafted around that time, and once he was done with the army, he left Gainesville and Leonard lost track of him. During the spring or early summer of 1954, singer/guitarist Merle Shelton cut Jetton's Chilena, My Dancing Girl, which was released as the B-side of Shelton's own I Love You Just Because, but Jetton's song quickly secured more airplay than the A-side. This all happened just about the same time that Jetton was going into the army, and he was never able to do much about it in terms of his career. His whereabouts have been unknown to the music business since 1954, although his single and Shelton's recordings of two of his songs appear on Bear Family's Lin and Kliff Story four-CD box, released in 1998. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
