Buci Moreira was one of the great samba composers of the '30s and '40s. Together with Wilson Batista and Raul Marques, he was one of the best-known samba sellers (the exchange of authorship for peanuts), a practice that impeded any hopes of fully realizing his creative potential. Grandson of the historic figure Tia Ciata, by whom he was raised, Buci Moreira had a thorough samba instruction in a house where the Carioca samba was incepted, later becoming a professional composer and percussionist. He was a member of the Bloco Deixa Falar and one of the founders and diretor de harmonia of the Vê Se Pode samba school of São Carlos Hill. Launched as a composer by Francisco Alves, who recorded his samba Palhaço with Nelson Alves in 1930, he also had several other hits: Anda, Vem Cá (recorded by Mário Reis and Francisco Alves in 1932), Gosto e Desgosto, Não É Assim Que Se Procede (recorded by Francisco Alves in 1945), Não Põe a Mão (with Arnô Canegal/Mutt, recorded by himself in 1951 and by several others after him), Quem Pode, Pode, Não Precisa Pagar, and Por Que É Que Você Chora. As a session musician, he worked regularly with the Columbia Orchestra, along with all kinds of sporadic gigs, such as films directed by Moacir Fenelon and Oscar Welles' film #Jangada. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
