Biography
Getúlio Côrtes was one of the most important composers of the "Jovem Guarda." His biggest hit was Negro Gato, which was recorded by Renato e Seus Blue Caps (in 1965) and Roberto Carlos (in 1966), among others, and later, in the '70s, by Luís Melodia. Renato e Seus Blue Caps also had success with his songs O Sósia, Esqueça e Perdoe, Tudo Tem Seu Preço, 46-77-23, and Disse-Me-Disse; while Roberto Carlos also had hits with Noite de Terror, Pega Ladrão, Quase Fui Lhe Procurar (also recorded by Luís Melodia), O Tempo Vai Apagar, O Feio (co-written by Renato Barros), Uma Palavra Amiga, and Eu Só Tenho Um Caminho. Due to his influence, his brother Gerson Côrtes (Gerson King Combo) had his first break on the #Jovem Guarda show.

Having been for all his life a very bad guitar player, Côrtes had to sing his compositions for his interpreters; he started in 1960 at Rádio Mayrink Veiga as an interpreter, having worked at several other radio stations. In that period, he was a member of the Wonderful Boys. In 1967, he worked on the #Jovem Guarda shows on TV Record (São Paulo) and TV Rio (Rio de Janeiro), both hosted by Roberto Carlos. In the next year, he was the musical director of the film #Jovens Pra Frente (Alcino Diniz), which had Rosemary and Jair Rodrigues as actors. He also has worked as musical director for recording companies. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
