Biography
Composer of Tenha Pena de Mim (written with Babaú), recorded by Aracy de Almeida in 1938, Ciro de Souza also wrote Marido da Orgia (recorded by Aracy in 1937) and Comigo Não (recorded by Linda Batista in 1941). Souza was son of the band master and chorão (choro player) Belarmino de Sousa. At 19, he wrote his first samba for a Carnival bloco of the São Cristóvão borough in Rio de Janeiro. Having debuted professionally in 1933 as a radio singer, he had in that period his sambas recorded by Jaime Vogeler, Luís Barbosa, and Moreira da Silva, starting with Olha Pro Céu (1934, by Jaime Vogeler). Souza was also a crooner in the orchestras of Fon-Fon, Napoleão Tavares, and Simon Bountman. His biggest hits are also Beijo na Boca (written with Augusto Garcez, recorded by Ciro Monteiro in 1940); A Mulher Que Eu Gosto (written with Wilson Batista, recorded by Monteiro in 1941); Juraci (written with Antônio Almeida, recorded by Vassourinha in 1941); Cho-Chô (written with Antônio Almeida, recorded by the Anjos do Inferno in the same year); and Vai Trabalhar (recorded in 1942 by Aracy de Almeida). ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
