Between then and 1961 he played on a couple of dozen albums, but subsequently not much has been heard from this bassist. Drew's musical etchings stateside were preceded by sketches of various musical happenings in his homeland. He started playing bass at the age of 16 in Liverpool, but this was 1943 so it was a trifle early to get into the Beatles. He did go off to London, finding work in show bands and pop combos, underlining Billy Ternent's lyrical sentences on BBC broadcasts. Les Elgart was the first well-known bandleader to make use of Drew upon his arrival on American shores. Master swing drummer Gene Krupa's subsequent interest in the bassist can be considered supremely flattering, since it led to Krupa's decision to add the instrument to his previously bass-less small combo. Drew's freelance gigs included backing vocalists such as Barbara Carroll and Peggy Lee. He also performed the 1957 season with the Miami Symphony. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
