Alvaiade is one of the most important names in the history of the Portela samba school. His high-quality production is represented well by sambas like Marinheiro de Primeira Viagem, Banco do Réu, and Embrulho Que Eu Carrego (all with Djalma Mafra), as well as Briga de Amor, Eu Não Sou Marinheiro, Chega, A Saudade Me Devora, Pensando No Futuro, O Que Vier Eu Traço, and Concurso para Enfarte. Jorge Veiga and Elizeth Cardoso are some of the artists who have recorded his compositions. Vida de Fidalga (with Chico Santana) was included in Portela Passado de Glória (1970) as one of the most representative compositions of the prestigious samba school. In 1928, he was invited by Paulo da Portela to join Portela. Still not a composer, he became an accompanist on the cavaquinho (he also played several percussion instruments). His first samba was O Que Vier Eu Traço (with Zé Maria), recorded by Elizeth Cardoso. Around 1934, Portela paraded to one of his sambas for the first time. Alvaiade was a close collaborator with Paulo da Portela, substituting for da Portela in his absences (especially on the occasions when da Portela traveled to São Paulo to perform with Cartola and Heitor dos Prazeres). Alvaiade was also chefe de conjunto (group coordinator) for almost 20 years, taking on similar duties as the diretor de harmonia (the person in charge of the main artistic responsibilities in a samba school), and was the launcher of composers Valter Rosa, Chico Santana, Manacéia, Candeia, and others. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
