Biography
To shape the swaggering, oddball indie rock of Diane Coffee, Foxygen drummer Shaun Fleming draws on the same enormous canon of '60s folk-pop, doo wop, and bubblegum influences that, along with classic rock, inspired Foxygen. The mutating project's debut release, the psychedelic-leaning My Friend Fish, surfaced in late 2013. Diane Coffee's technology-inspired third album, 2019's Internet Arms, took on a symbolically more modern, synthetic sound, while 2022's more personal With People favored the mellower tones of '70s and '80s soft rock.

A former child voice-over actor for Disney films, Shaun Fleming began the solo project Diane Coffee in late 2012 after moving from his hometown of Agoura Hills, California to New York City. Within days of his move, Fleming was struck with a vicious flu virus that kept him quarantined in his tiny new apartment for several weeks. With the downtime and boredom of being ill in a new environment afforded him, Fleming wrote and recorded what would become the first Diane Coffee album, My Friend Fish. It saw release by Western Vinyl Records in late 2013 and touring followed.

Fleming next moved to Bloomington, Indiana and began working on a second album. Recorded in a real studio with a large number of collaborators and more ambitious arrangements, Everybody's a Good Dog followed in 2015. Diane Coffee returned in 2017 with Peel, a 7" with songs inspired by urban legends from Fleming's childhood. Fleming appeared as King Herod in the Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2018 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar before returning to the recording studio later in the year. Reacting to the increasing distinctions between authentic and online versions of self, Diane Coffee's third full-length, Internet Arms, arrived via Polyvinyl in 2019. 2022's still more contemplative With People, also on Polyvinyl, was produced by Foxygen's Jonathan Rado and welcomed an appearance by Deep Sea Diver. By its arrival that April, Fleming had moved his base to Los Angeles. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
