Biography
The Mayfair Set were a Birmingham, England, outfit organized as a backing band for vocalist Danny King, who had previously fronted outfits called the Dukes and the Royals. They were put together in 1965, with a lineup that included future Move member Trevor Burton on guitar and vocals and Keith Smart on drums -- they and King were good enough to attract the attention of producer Norrie Paramor, resulting in a single entitled Pretty Things, which never charted. The latter, according to the Brum Beat website, may have included Roy Wood as well as other members of Mike Sheridan's Nightriders. King exited the combo at the start of 1966 but the band continued on for a time, with a membership that included Christopher Evans (aka Christopher Robin) and David Reay, both later of the World of Oz. The Mayfair Set had broken up by 1967, however, and Smart went on to play with the Ugly's, while bassist Dennis Ball became a member of the short-lived Ace Kefford Stand. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
