Biography
Musical traditions are woven together through the music of Brooklyn-born and Denver, Colorado-based folk songstress Carla Sciaky (pronounced: See-AH-kee). With her pure, soprano, vocals accompanied on a wide variety of instruments, Sciaky combines soft-spoken sensitivity with a unique gift at romantic balladry.

Sciaky inherited her love of music from her mother, a piano playing nursery school teacher and camp counselor. Singing and dancing by the age of two, Sciaky was fascinated by her mother's playing. Although she began classical studies in the keyboard, Sciaky's musical direction was altered when she learned to play guitar, at the age of fourteen, while spending the summer in Oaxaca, Mexico with her grandmother and fifteen American teenaged girls.

Although she played with a high school folk-rock band, Propinquity, Sciaky remained faithful to her academic pursuits, enrolling in college in the urban studies department. Sciaky's return to music, following two years in college, was sparked by a recorder workshop she attended. Accepting the teacher's invitation to join his early music ensemble, Sciaky turned her focus to traditional folk and ethnic music.

Launching her musical career in 1981, Sciaky recorded her debut album, In Between four years later. Sciaky's subsequent recordings include The Awakening, a harmony-filled album featuring guest vocalists Claudia Schmidt and Molly O'Brien, released in 1995, a children's recording, Wishes And Dreams, released in 1991, and an album, Spin The Weaver's Song, released in 1992 and celebrating the traditions of spinning, weaving and sheep-shearing.

In addition to her solo recordings, Sciaky has recorded with The Mother Folkers, the all-woman ensemble that claims to possess, "the most carefully pronounced name in folk music." ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
