Like many pioneers of the Michigan scene, rapper Baby Money grew up in the region’s cultural hotspot of Detroit, starting to hone his rap talents at the age of just 12. Using early mixtapes like Sosa World (2017) and Time a Tell (2019) to find his place within the city’s crowded rap landscape, the MC tested his mettle against the rap sonics of the era, building a substantial following by the turn of the decade. After taking more steps into his region’s signature sound with 2020’s Impatient and Blank Checc, the rapper made a full-fledged leap into Michigan sonics with 2021’s Young N***a Old Soul, working with scene mainstays like Helluva, RMC Mike, and Louie Ray in a series of faster-paced bangers. Impressed with the buzz generated by this sonic shift, Atlanta’s Quality Control signed Baby Money in January 2022, providing him with the tools to flesh out his sound. Seizing the opportunity with both hands, he quickly produced his strongest mixtape yet, Easy Money, a barrage of stomping anthems that moved with a signature Detroit groove. This was followed later that year by the 16-track New Money, a continuation of the rapper’s bounced-up flows and effortlessly cocky verses. ~ David Crone, Rovi
