Biography
Discographies sometimes list this band as Ever Call Ready, and sometimes attribute their sole release (also titled Ever Call Ready) to one, some, or all of the musicians on the recording. A supergroup of sorts, the band featured Chris Hillman (ex-Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas), Bernie Leadon (ex-Eagles), and Jerry Scheff (a member of Southern Pacific, and session bass player on many well-known pop and rock recordings), as well as singer/guitarist/dobro player Al Perkins (ex-Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas) and fiddler/guitarist/mandolinist David Mansfield (ex-Alpha Band). Although they were most famous for their rock and pop records, on Ever Call Ready they stuck exclusively to traditional-styled bluegrass and gospel/Christian-themed songs. This wasn't as much of a surprise as some who knew the musicians only for their more prominent commercial work might have guessed; Hillman and Leadon had been bluegrass musicians before moving into rock, both playing bluegrass in the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers back in the early '60s. Considering that the album consisted entirely of traditional songs and material by outside writers, however, Ever Call Ready seemed like a side project, allowing the musicians to express sides of their musical roots and religious beliefs that were not always evident in their more commercial endeavors. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
