Biography
Country super-sessionman Joe Curley Smyth spent most of his time in Nashville during the 1980s and '90s, but the classically trained drummer had previously played with several Florida symphony orchestras. Born in the Sunshine State in 1957, Smyth attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music and the University of Miami, earning degrees in percussion performance and composition. He worked with the Miami Philharmonic, the Brookline Symphony, and the Miami Pops during the late '70s and early '80s, but moved to Nashville by 1981 to work on various country sessions. By the middle of the decade, he joined the country supergroup Sawyer Brown and stayed with the band into the early '90s. ~ John Bush, Rovi
