Biography
Drummer Louis Cottrell, Sr. played with the John Robichaux and Olympia Orchestras in the early 1900s in New Orleans before moving to Chicago in 1915 with Manuel Perez's band. Cottrell spent his later years back in New Orleans playing and recording with A.J. Piron's orchestra. He's credited with introducing the press roll as a drumming technique and with influencing other drummers like Baby Dodds, Cie Frazier, and Alfred Williams. His son, Louis Cottrell, Jr., was a clarinetist and tenor saxophonist who established his own legacy in traditional jazz. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
