His name was Earl 
And you could tell by his girl 
That he liked to hit women 
 
I figured she'd leave him 
Cause she had all the reasons 
She leaned even deeper in 
 
so I got on my horse,  
and left of course 
Cause there's nothing you can do 
When you're a bounty hunter baby 
And she won't let you shoot 
 
It seemed like it might  
Might be right 
To start the trail to far away 
 
Where you don't know a face 
And you don't have a trace 
And you're made of empty space 
 
But deep into the trail 
i smelled something stale 
like a rotted out beached whale 
It was Earl and his girl 
They were shooting at trees and squirrels 
 
They shot me in the arm  
They shot me in the leg 
 I barely crawled away 
 
I looked for a road 
Or a path or a trail  
Or any place to getaway  
 
And I started to pray 
Though Ive never really prayed 
It's just a fancy way to say 
 
May there be a road 
May there be a road 
That will lead me to where I need to go 
 
 
I laid in a ditch for nine days 
 
Before I finally crawled away 
 
I'm living on lonely mountain 
all alone 
 
Cause my horse decided not to go 
 
But before we parted  
We shared a drink 
And we thought about the times  
That we lived on the brink 
 
And he leaned to me  
Real slow
