Valencia

in the hallways and the alley
in the freeway and the rut
they stream through
the oak trees and old food trucks
on any afternoon or evening
in the parking lot or strand
I'm sure they know where Valencia stands

so Valencia sweet talking
through a field of laughing gulls
is like the thin profile of a summersault
I call her when it's over
she says "I'm tired of this job"
and we go stroll down the great boulevard

"do you see her in the street she's so beautiful and loud?"
"yeah, she's a capricorn"
"I hear the last one faltered, broke his neck upon her arm"
"she's with a new one now"
bits of speech fall on the floor
deadly, landing on the floor
bits of speech grow arms and roar
deafened in the young dumb roar

Little Italy is built all up inside the brain
of all the patrons of the White Sage
the dress is always changing
but one thing is for sure
that conversation's always the cure
above their heads an airplane writes in contrails in the sky
"oh, how you look so small from most any eye!"
I think it's laughing with them
or at them, I'm not sure
either way, it makes a good picture

"you see her in the street she's so beautiful and loud?"
"yeah, I see her skin in the clouds"
"so you think you'd be the fire that she is dancing round?"
"I'd be a light that she found"

I'm gonna wash out all the wet fumes and the boredom of that jealous stare
meet me with your two eyes, wet eyes wide open, so I know that you care
I would adore you like a blunt tool to destroy it
play a dumb coward sighing, crying, to annoy it

in a lake house in the summer
with a key under the door
I know, I go sometimes to escape the roar
Valencia is swimming
out naked in the lake
with the birds brimming and
the water snakes
