Biography
Emerging from the same Flint, Michigan music scene which also produced garage legends ? and the Mysterians, Terry Knight and the Pack also earned its spot in local rock history as a launching pad for Grand Funk Railroad. Knight -- a.k.a. Terry Knapp -- got his start during the early 1960s as a disc jockey at Windsor/Detroit station CKLW, and by the middle of the decade decided to take a shot at making records of his own; assembling the Pack -- guitarists Mark Farner and Kurt Johnson, keyboardist Bob Caldwell and drummer Don Brewer -- he cut a cover of the Yardbirds' "Better Man Than I" which became a local hit. Although the melodramatic "I Who Have Nothing" fell just shy of the national Top 40, the group enjoyed little success in the years to follow; finally, in 1968 Knight -- now an A&R executive at Capitol -- assembled Farner, Brewer and ex-Mysterians bassist Mel Schacher to form Grand Funk, managing the group until his dismissal in 1972. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
