Yung Gleesh was born Asa Asuncion in 1989. He grew up in Washington, D.C. and, before becoming a rapper, he was a percussionist in TOB, a go-go band he co-founded. His first forays into rap came in the early 2010s with a series of raw and unfiltered singles and mixtapes. Early mixtapes like Ain't Shit Changed and Cleanside's Finest 3 saw Gleesh shifting through various styles, with tracks like "Wasabi" predicting the mumble rap trend that would emerge in the years that followed. He was prominently featured in A$AP Rocky's 2014 video for "Multiply," not in a rap cameo but an extended segment that showcased his dancing. The video would go on to be viewed over 40 million times. More big-name collaborations followed, with Gleesh performing alongside Yung Lean, A$AP Mob, and others. This led the unsigned rapper to ink a deal with Asylum Records in 2017 and release his Gleesh mixtape with the label the following year. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
