Biography
Formed in 2006, the Ghent-based creative jazz quintet Wofo ("With others, for others") is largely a vehicle for performing and recording the compositions of bassist Xavier Verhelst, who plays electric six-string bass on the band's albums but who can be spotted in photographs with a standard acoustic upright. The bright, listener-friendly, yet expressive and even adventurous quintet released its debut album, The Complete Hamsessions, in 2007, featuring, in addition to Verhelst, clarinetist/bass clarinetist Mattias Laga (also a member of the world music group Jaune Toujours), saxophonist Michel Mast (X-Legged Sally, Flat Earth Society), guitarist Walter Verschaeren, and drummer Tom De Wulf (Fukkeduk). In 2009, Wofo released their amiable sophomore album, Tweedt, again consisting entirely of music penned by Verhelst, drawing influences from creative jazz, modern composition, contemporary instrumental, and international traditions from klezmer to Balkan to township jazz to bossa nova. The lineup of musicians on Tweedt was identical to that featured on Wofo's debut.

The quintet's third album, 2011's Bark, continued the engaging flavor of its predecessors but with a shift in tone and timbre brought by the replacement of guitarist Verschaeren with pianist Stijn Engels, whose addition to the group gave the recording a somewhat more expansive modern jazz feel. Wofo subsequently reported an additional change in lineup (but not instrumentation), with Pieter Baert seated on the piano bench and Simon Raman on the drum stool. In addition, the ensemble added American-born trumpeter Jon Birdsong (now a resident of Antwerp) for a live program of cartoony music entitled Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies & More: Music from and Inspired by Raymond Scott; with the addition of Birdsong, the group's instrumentation mirrored that of the Raymond Scott Quintette (which was actually a sextet), and Wofo took the name Wofo Sextette for the occasion. In 2014 Wofo recorded and released their fourth album, Erratic Tails, with the core quintet joined by a string trio (aka the Wofettes) featuring violinists Cécile Broché and Anouk Sanczuk and cellist Eline Duerinck. ~ Dave Lynch, Rovi
