The Jackson Blue Boys -- featuring no one named Jackson, so the reference must have been to the Mississippi city -- was a blues supergroup well before the term had ever been invented. The three members were accomplished players on at least twice as many instruments and all had recording careers in their own right. Reissue documentation of the group reinforces the latter fact, sides such as the sneaky Hidin' on Me available on collections issued under the names of Charlie McCoy and Walter Vinson, for example.

Not to be confused with the later country and western harmonica ace, McCoy sang and backed himself on guitar, mandolin, and accordion. His partner, Vinson, was a country blues guitarist and singer. The third member, Bo Carter, had similar talents and interests and also played banjo and bass. Columbia talent scout Frank Walker taped the trio during an intense series of sessions at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans near the close of 1928. He was probably not hinting at a connection with future trios such as the Minutemen when he wrote the following comment in a letter to a fellow producer: "Good trip so far and lots of good records (we hope) but who can tell, they may all be punk." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
