Cicero Nunes was a successful composer who, in his best period, had a hit every year. Nunes was recorded by eminent performers such as Castro Barbosa, Carmen Miranda, Dircinha Batista, Barbosa Júnior, Patrício Teixeira, Araci de Almeida, Orlando Silva, Francisco Alves, Nelson Gonçalves, Isaurinha Garcia, Anísio Silva, Isaurinha Garcia, Jamelão, and Moreira da Silva. Nunes learned to play the violão (acoustic guitar) while he was an ambulance driver for Pedro Ernesto Hospital, one in a series of humble jobs he held. Soon he wrote Não Chora, which was copied in a recording. Writing other songs that remained unpublished, in 1935 he showed them to the composer Buci Moreira, who inspired him. With Moreira, he wrote Boa Impressão, performed by Dalila de Almeida in the show +Samba e Outras Coisas. In 1936 he wrote Oh, José with Portelo Juno, recorded by Castro Barbosa. In the next year, Carmen Miranda recorded with success Me Dá, Me Dá (with Juno). In 1938 Dircinha Batista and Barbosa Júnior recorded Ele Não Dorme Sem Apanhar. The following year Patrício Teixeira recorded Ao Voltar da Batucada (with Max Bulhões). Araci de Almeida recorded Pão com Banana in 1940. Most of these songs are humorous choros. In 1944 Nunes adhered to the samba-canção, writing Tudo é Possível (with Aldo Cabral), recorded by Orlando Silva; Apogeu (with Herivelto Martins), recorded by Francisco Alves; Aquela Mulher, by Nelson Gonçalves; Mensagem, by Isaurinha Garcia, and others. Nunes also became a accompanist, playing the violão. His songs continued to be recorded with success -- as recently as 1961, his music was recorded by Anísio Silva, Isaurinha Garcia, Jamelão, and Moreira da Silva. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
